Red-tailed Hawks soar at 20-40 mph, but when diving may exceed 120 mph. The act of mantling is one of protecting its prey from other predators. The most common hawk used in falconry in the United States is the Red-tailed Hawk, as they have proven to be easily trained as capable hunters.
